Studio OTT Service

Diligence

Overview

While the OTT landscape in the US is currently dominated by “tent pole” services from Netflix, Amazon, HBO and Hulu, market data indicates a growing demand for niche OTT offerings. Recognizing it was well positioned to address this trend due to its content catalog and deep network of industry relationships, an entrepreneurial studio embarked on a strategy to launch niche OTT services. Two services were launched in two years; however, in the race to market, each service was launched on a unique tech stack and managed by an independent team. With two additional services due to launch, the studio realized it had reached a crossroads.

What We Did

In the initial phase of the engagement, Konstrukt conducted a SWOT analysis of over 20 OTT vendors in order to determine the best incumbent and greenfield options for the studio’s new OTT services. The results and recommendations were shared in a half-day workshop that included business and technical stakeholders. The outcome was a vendor shortlist. In the next phase of the engagement, Konstrukt ran a focused RFP directed at the down-selected vendors. In addition to product and technology diligence, Konstrukt developed a comprehensive financial model in order to determine the TOC of each option and provide the transparency required to negotiate with vendors.

Outcome

The engagement allowed the studio to fully understand the potential of a recently acquired technology asset as well as better negotiate with a partner that was courting them as part of a strategic relationship. While the initial emphasis of the engagement was on the studio’s new OTT initiatives, the process provided the perspective required to understand the technology needs of the studio’s existing services. As a consequence, the studio was able to establish a roadmap that rationalized its vendors and reduced the overall costs of its OTT initiates.
